Major Mountains & Ranges 

Arunachal Pradesh 

  • Eastern Himalayas -The state is part of the Eastern Himalayan region.
  • Patkai Hills - Along the Indo-Myanmar border.
  • Dafla Hills - Located in the western part of Arunachal, near Bhutan.
  • Mishmi Hills - Located in the easternmost part.
  • Sela Range - Famous for the Sela Pass.
  • Namcha Barwa (7,782 m) - Located near the tri-junction of Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam (in Tibet, but geographically influences Arunachal terrain).
  • Kangto Peak (7,060 m) - Highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh.

Assam

  • Karbi Anglong Hills - Central Assam.
  • North Cachar Hills (Dima Hasao) - Southern Assam.
  • Mikir Hills - Located south of the Kaziranga National Park.
  • Patkai Hills - Shared with Arunachal and Nagaland.
  • Barail Range - Located in the southern part, near Meghalaya and Manipur.

Note: Assam mostly has hill ranges and not very high mountains like Arunachal Pradesh, as it lies in the Brahmaputra valley region.

Himachal Pradesh 

1. Pir Panjal Range

  • Lies to the south of the main Himalayas
  • Starts from Jammu & Kashmir and extends into Himachal
  • Rohtang Pass is located here

2. Dhauladhar Range

  • Famous around Kangra and Dharamshala
  • Known for its snow-covered peaks and sharp cliffs

3. Great Himalayan Range (Himadri)

  • Contains many high peaks
  • Includes Reo Purgyil (6,816 m) – Highest peak in Himachal Pradesh

4. Zanskar Range

  • Located in the eastern part, near Lahaul and Spiti

Uttarakhand 

1. Great Himalayas (Himadri)

  • Home to many famous and tall peaks
  • Nanda Devi (7,816 m) – Highest peak in Uttarakhand and second highest in India

2. Lesser Himalayas (Himachal)

  • Includes regions like Mussoorie and Nainital

3. Shivalik Range (Outer Himalayas)

  • The foothill region of Uttarakhand
  • Kumaon and Garhwal Hills

Important hill regions with tourist and pilgrimage sites (e.g., Kedarnath, Badrinath)

Famous Peaks

  • Trisul (7,120 m)
  • Kamet (7,756 m)
  • Chaukhamba (7,138 m)
  • Panchachuli (6,904 m)

Jammu & Kashmir 

1. Greater Himalayas (Himadri Range)

  • Covers northern Kashmir and parts of Ladakh
  • Includes some of the tallest peaks in the Indian Himalayas

2. Pir Panjal Range

  • Lies south of the Greater Himalayas
  • Separates the Kashmir Valley from the outer Himalayas
  • Banihal Pass and Pir Panjal Pass are located here

3. Zanskar Range (extends into Ladakh too)

  • Lies north of the Great Himalayas in parts of eastern J&K

4. Shivalik Hills (Outer Himalayas)

  • Found in southern Jammu region (lower hills)

  • Kolhoi Peak (5,425 m)
  • Sunset Peak (4,745 m)
  • Tatakooti Peak (4,725 m)

Ladakh 

1. Karakoram Range

  • Northernmost range in India
  • Home to Saltoro Ridge and Siachen Glacier
  • Contains Saser Kangri (7,672 m) – Highest peak in the Indian part of Karakoram

2. Zanskar Range

  • Lies between the Suru River and Indus River
  • Important range within central Ladakh

3. Ladakh Range

  • Lies to the north of the Indus River
  • Lower in height than the Zanskar and Karakoram ranges
  • Nubra Valley – Lies between the Ladakh and Karakoram ranges

Sikkim (India)

1. Greater Himalayas (Himadri Range)

  • Dominates the northern part of Sikkim
  • Includes some of the tallest peaks in India

Important Peaks

  • Kangchenjunga (8,586 m) – 3rd highest mountain in the world, highest in India
  • Kabru Peak (7,338 m)
  • Pandim Peak (6,691 m)
  • Sinolchu (6,888 m) – Considered one of the most beautiful peaks
  • Zemu Glacier – Largest glacier in Sikkim, located near Kangchenjunga

Mountain Passes

  • Nathula Pass – Connects Sikkim with Tibet
  • Jelep La Pass – Historical trade route to Tibet

1. Himalaya Range (Main Range through Nepal)

Home to 8 of the world’s 14 highest peaks (above 8,000 meters)

  • Lhotse (8,516 m) – 4th highest
  • Makalu (8,485 m) – 5th highest
