New UPI Rules from 1 August 2025

New UPI Rules from August 1

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees and manages UPI (Unified Payments Interface), is rolling out major updates to UPI usage rules effective from August 1. If you're someone who regularly uses Google Pay, PhonePe, PayTM, BHIM, or any other UPI app, these rule changes will directly impact your daily transactions.

These changes are aimed at improving the efficiency, security, and stability of digital payments in India, especially during peak usage hours when millions of transactions happen simultaneously.

Let’s explore the new UPI rules in detail and understand how they affect your financial behavior.

Limit on Balance Checks – Only 50 Times a Day per App

Most UPI users frequently check their bank balance multiple times a day. Starting August 1, NPCI has set a cap of 50 balance checks per UPI app, per day.

📌 Why This Change?

  • During peak hours, balance check requests consume significant server resources.
  • Reducing frequent balance checks helps decongest UPI networks.

New Feature

  • Your balance will automatically be shown after every transaction – helping you avoid the need to check it manually.

Example: If you use Google Pay and check your balance 55 times a day, your request will be blocked after the 50th attempt.

Auto Payment Processing Limited to Fixed Time Slots

UPI Autopay features like automatic deductions for SIPs, EMIs, loan repayments, OTT subscriptions (Netflix, Amazon Prime), and utility bills will now be processed only during non-peak hours.

Allowed Autopay Hours

  • Before 10:00 AM
  • Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
  • After 9:30 PM

No Autopay During

  • 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
  • 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM

Retry System: If your autopay fails during restricted hours, it will be retried later in the allowed time window.

Example: If your OTT subscription is set for 11 AM, it might get deducted before 10 AM or after 1 PM depending on system load.

Limit on Retrieving Linked Bank Accounts – 25 Times a Day

Users can now check the bank accounts linked to their mobile number only 25 times per day via UPI apps.

📌 Purpose

  • Prevent fraudulent or repeated requests to access user data.
  • Reduce system overload during peak times.

Example: You install PhonePe and try to fetch linked accounts 30 times in a day – you’ll only be able to do it 25 times.

Quick Transaction Status Updates – No More Waiting

One of the most common UPI issues is when money is debited from your account but not received by the recipient. UPI apps will now be required to show real-time transaction status.

New Rule

  • Transaction status must be updated within seconds.
  • User can check the status only 3 times, with a 90-second gap between each check.

📌 Purpose

  • Reduce server congestion caused by constant status refreshes.
  • Provide accurate feedback to users quickly.

Example: If a payment is “pending”, you can check status 3 times only, and you need to wait 90 seconds between checks.

Recipient’s Registered Name Will Be Visible on Every Transaction

Before completing any UPI payment, users will see the official registered name of the recipient.

📌 Benefits

  • Helps prevent wrong transactions or payments to fraudulent accounts.
  • Adds trust and transparency to the process.

Example: If you pay someone named “Rahul Sharma”, the UPI app will show “Rahul Sharma” or his registered entity’s name before payment confirmation.

Why Are These Changes Important?

NPCI’s goal is to:

  • Reduce overload and failures during peak transaction hours.
  • Encourage responsible app usage.
  • Make UPI safer, faster, and more reliable.
