Key Takeaways for December 2025 Aspirants

  • Difficulty Factor: If the December 2025 paper for your shift was tougher than previous sessions, you might see the cut-off drop by 4–8 marks.
  • Qualified Candidates: In the last December 2024 cycle, only 5,158 candidates qualified for JRF, while over 1.14 lakh qualified for PhD admission only.
  • Normalization: For subjects conducted in multiple shifts (like Hindi or History), NTA uses Percentile Scores rather than raw marks to ensure fairness across different difficulty levels.

Next Steps for You

Once the results are live today:

  1. Check Percentile vs. Marks: Ensure you check both. If your subject has multiple shifts, your percentile is what determines your rank.

  2. Download E-Certificate: If you qualify, the NTA portal usually makes the certificates available within 2–3 weeks.

  3. JRF Timeline: If you've won the JRF, remember it’s valid for 3 years. You must enroll in a PhD program within this window to claim the fellowship.

Here are the cut-off marks for reserved categories (OBC-NCL, SC, and ST) for the most popular subjects.

These figures are based on the June 2025 and December 2024 sessions. As the December 2025 results are coming out today, you can use these as a benchmark to see how close you are to the qualifying range.

Minimum Qualifying Marks vs. Cut-Off Marks

It is important to distinguish between the minimum qualifying marks and the actual cut-off:

Minimum Qualifying Marks: This is the basic requirement to be considered for the merit list.

  • General/Unreserved: 40% aggregate in both papers.
  • OBC/SC/ST/PwD: 35% aggregate in both papers.
  • Actual Cut-Off: Scoring the minimum 35% or 40% does not guarantee a pass. The final cut-off is determined by the top 6% of candidates for Assistant Professor and the top 1% for JRF.

Understanding "PhD Only" Category

Since the 2024 session, NTA introduced a third category. If you don't qualify for JRF or Assistant Professor, you might still qualify for PhD admission only (Category-3).

  • Weightage: Your NET score will count for 70% of the weightage for PhD admission in most central and state universities, with the remaining 30% based on an interview.
  • Validity: This Category-3 status is usually valid for one year for PhD admissions.
