Parts of Speech are categories of words based on their function in a sentence. In English grammar, there are 8 main parts of speech:

1. Noun

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples:

  • Person – Ram, teacher
  • Place – Delhi, school
  • Thing – book, phone

Example Sentence: Ram is reading a book.

2. Pronoun

A pronoun is used instead of a noun to avoid repetition.

  • Examples: I, we, you, he, she, it, they
  • Example Sentence: Ram is absent because he is sick.

3. Verb

A verb shows action or state of being.

Examples:

  • Action – run, eat, write
  • State – is, am, are

Example Sentence

  • She writes a letter.
  • He is happy.

4. Adjective

An adjective describes or modifies a noun.

  • Examples: big, small, red, intelligent
  • Example Sentence: She has a beautiful dress.

5. Adverb

An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Examples: quickly, very, slowly, well

Example Sentence:

  • He runs quickly.
  • She is very smart.

6. Preposition

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words in the sentence.

  • Examples: in, on, at, under, between
  • Example Sentence: The book is on the table.

7. Conjunction

A conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences.

  • Examples: and, but, or, because
  • Example Sentence: I like tea and coffee.

8. Interjection

An interjection expresses sudden emotion or feeling.

  • Examples: Wow! Oh! Alas!
  • Example Sentence: Wow! That is amazing.
