Parts of Speech are categories of words based on their function in a sentence. In English grammar, there are 8 main parts of speech:
1. Noun
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples:
- Person – Ram, teacher
- Place – Delhi, school
- Thing – book, phone
- Idea – honesty, freedom
Example Sentence: Ram is reading a book.
2. Pronoun
A pronoun is used instead of a noun to avoid repetition.
- Examples: I, we, you, he, she, it, they
- Example Sentence: Ram is absent because he is sick.
3. Verb
A verb shows action or state of being.
Examples:
- Action – run, eat, write
- State – is, am, are
Example Sentence
- She writes a letter.
- He is happy.
4. Adjective
An adjective describes or modifies a noun.
- Examples: big, small, red, intelligent
- Example Sentence: She has a beautiful dress.
5. Adverb
An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Examples: quickly, very, slowly, well
Example Sentence:
- He runs quickly.
- She is very smart.
6. Preposition
A preposition shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words in the sentence.
- Examples: in, on, at, under, between
- Example Sentence: The book is on the table.
7. Conjunction
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences.
- Examples: and, but, or, because
- Example Sentence: I like tea and coffee.
8. Interjection
An interjection expresses sudden emotion or feeling.
- Examples: Wow! Oh! Alas!
- Example Sentence: Wow! That is amazing.
